How to Start a Pet Care Business

If you love pets, and you've always wanted to work more with them and their owners, maybe now's the right time to start that pet care business you've dreamed about. There are several steps to follow if you want to make that dream a reality. Read on to learn about those steps.

Find Your Niche

Your first step in starting your pet care business is to determine what kind of business you want. Maybe you've always wanted to be a pet sitter. If so, determine how many clients you can handle, the level of care you can provide, and the kinds of pets you're willing to care for. You may simply feed, walk, and play with a pet for a couple of days while its owner is out of town, or you may have a longer-term job caring for a pet while its owner is at work.

If pet sitting doesn't seem quite right for you, consider pet grooming, dog walking, running a kennel, or selling pet care items online. Build on your talents, and pay close attention to your schedule, time constraints, and other ongoing responsibilities.

Do Some Research

Next, do some research about your chosen niche in the pet care world. Learn exactly what's involved in your job (although you can tailor it to suit your needs). Understand applicable laws and regulations, licensing requirements, tax issues, and business structures and registrations. You're responsible for knowing all these details, completing the necessary paperwork, and paying applicable taxes.

Write a Business Plan

A business plan helps you organize every aspect of your new venture. Begin with an executive statement that summarizes the purpose of your business in a few sentences, then expand on this with your business description. Talk about the services you plan to provide, the fees you anticipate charging, the rules and regulations you plan to follow with regard to client interactions, contracts you want to present to clients, and ways you can resolve disputes. The next section of your business plan describes your marketing strategies and lays out your initial sales goals. Finally, include your detailed budget.

Take Care of Legalities

Once your business plan is in place, take care of the legalities surrounding your new business. Register it with the state and local governments if necessary. Obtain any required licenses or permits, purchase insurance, and/or be bonded. Set up your business financial accounts. If you run into difficulties with any of this, talk to a business consultant or bookkeeper for help.

Market Your Business

Now you're finally ready to start marketing your new pet care business in New York, New York. Build a website, and get the word out on social media. Place an advertisement in your local newspaper, or put up posters around town. Also, ask your friends and relatives to spread the word about your new venture, and request satisfied customers to give you recommendations.
